"Gete-Onigaming: The Old Portage"
Davenport Road, Toronto
Commissioned by Hydro One
2023
The installation of this artwork along the barrier wall at the Hydro One station is a marker of an ancient travel route that was used by First Nations people for thousands of years. Davenport road is the oldest and longest route in Ontario. It's vital that we maintain our presence as Anishinaabeg people on our lands to acknowledge the significant history that these places hold.
The symbolism used here helps to tell the story of the connection between the people and the place. Bent trees have historically been used by First Nations people to mark and guide those who are travelling. The direction of the bent tree would indicate which path to follow. The hummingbirds are a reminder of those who walked before us and connect us with our ancestors. The four eagle feathers carry strong medicine within them.
